Told in the form of reminiscences by the immortal sorcerer Sebastian Grave, this book needed to ace not just the plot but also the character's voice. Sullivan nails them both. He handles the history with restraint as well as authority, even when he's retelling a well-known story. Sebastian is deeply morally ambiguous, and Sullivan never lets him off the hook when it comes to making hard choices.

I want ten more books about Sebastian, his in-dwelling demon Sarmodel, and their not-very-faithful succubus servant Livia. If you don't mind your horror moderately gruesome, you will love this.
