Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (Tad Williams)

This wonderful fantasy series has everything: memorable characters, great set-pieces, and fun world-building. I especially appreciated that the central conflict of the story is about the consequences of an ancient injustice, and that much of the drama is about the characters coming to understand and accept what their ancestors did.
